Eli's Tonsillectomy

Eli was such a trooper, we had to be to the hospital by 7am for his tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.  He enjoyed playing and watching TV before his surgery.

The surgery was quick and done in less time than it took for me to set up my laptop and post to fb that he was in surgery.  We were in recovery for longer than he was in surgery.

Back in post op, Eli was still a bit groggy from the anesthesia.  But once that wore off, you would have been hard pressed to realize he'd just been through surgery.  We had to keep him from jumping up and down on the bed and running around the halls of the hospital.  He was in such good spirits and really enjoyed his slushies that he was given.  He was also impatient to have the iv removed.  He did think it pretty neat that Cookie Monster also got prepped for surgery and even had his own name band put on.

A short 5 hours later and we were headed home.  Eli was running and bouncing out to the car.  In the first image he is distraught that we forgot to grab his blankie.  Daddy was our hero though and went back inside to get it.  I can't believe how well Eli did with his surgery and I had prepped myself for the worst.  Thankfully we sailed through this experience with no set back.

Eli's EEG

Eli's EEG the next day went much better than his MRI. He was able to be conscious the whole time. The only mishap was right after we first got there. While his head was being marked up for them to know where to place the nodes, Eli threw up all over the floor. Amazingly, none of it ended up on any of us. We decided to move forward with the procedure and we didn't have any more problems. (We're thinking it was a combination of anxiety from the MRI the day before, after effects of the sedatives used for the MRI, and congestion.) He did wonderfully for the EEG, thankfully. We're still awaiting those test results though. I asked to take his picture once the test was over.

Eli's MRI

Eli had an MRI done on Valentine's Day. Before the procedure he was playful and full of energy.

They had to sedate him for the procedure. They maxed him out on the sedative and actually had to give him some benadryl before he fell asleep. Then he still woke up while he was inside the machine. Poor baby! Thankfully they didn't need him to go back in the machine.

We were allowed to leave, once they saw that he was able to walk on his own. He was so groggy (which I expected) and pathetic looking. Poor little guy. For being my easy going child he certainly has been to the doctor the most.

By the end of the week, we had the results of the MRI back. The scan showed no brain abnormalities but did show fluid on the ears and large tonsils. The fluid in the ears could help explain his speech delay, and the large tonsils may indicate sleep apnea. So our next step is a sleep study.

The Morning After Surgery

His eyes are a little swollen but looking pretty good for having surgery just a little over 24 hours ago. His eyes looked nothing like I thought they would after surgery. The eye doctor kept saying the corners of his eyes might be red for up to six weeks after the surgery. So I'm thinking the corners on the eyelid not on the EYEBALL. Hello. I realize I should have known this given the amount of time that I spent researching the type of surgery he had done but I don't recall any pictures that showed the eyes after the surgery. Anyway as of today (6/19) Eli is doing great and healing well. His eye doctor is very happy with the results and I too have noticed a difference in the alignment of his eyes. Here in the beginning his eyes will tend to turn out but should ultimately correct itself as they heal.

Eli had corrective eye surgery on June 3.

It took a little while but here he is eating and drinking. He was sharing the roast beef from daddy's sandwich.

He was more concerned about that band-aid than anything else at this point.

Neither of my boys like having band-aids, so they are not the easy fix that they are for most kids. This is probably a good thing since I won't need to buy a lot of band-aids. But then again this could change, they are only toddlers.
